A student from King Edward VI College in Nuneaton is planning to raise money for a trip to South Africa this year.
Lauren McGrath, from Coventry is going to South Africa with the Girl Guides this summer to work in the community. Lauren, who has to raise £3000 to fund the trip, has already raised £2000 by holding stalls at church and school fetes, a bingo night, auction and bag packing.
Lauren has been in the Girl Guides for 5 years and has already travelled to India to work in the community.
“Being in The Girl Guides has given me so many opportunities I would never have experienced otherwise. It also helped me through exam season at school and the experience I have gained looks great on my CV and helped me get my part time job. ”
Now a Young Leader and Senior Section Member, Lauren is doing her Adult Leadership Qualification and Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award. The trip to South Africa is through Projects Abroad who organise overseas volunteer projects. 8 girls and 2 leaders will be travelling on the 24th July and will stay for 3 weeks. They will be staying with a host family in Cape Town and working with children, who live in abusive and violent surroundings, to ensure they gain important life skills during the key stages of development whilst in a calm and constructive environment. This work will take place in schools, crèches and community centers. The Guides also have the opportunity to build resources for the South African community.
Lauren, who is from Wyken in Coventry and went to Foxford School, is studying A level Law, Sociology and English Language “I chose to come to King Edward VI College from Coventry because I knew I wanted to study law at University so my only option was to take A levels. I also wanted to study in a more grown up environment.”
Lauren said “I’m still looking for more ways to raise money. I’m hoping to do some more bag packing and hold some events at college.”
