Courses / Mathematical Studies
Mathematical Studies is a level 3 course that is worth half an A level. It is recognised by universities and employers and carries UCAS points as per an AS qualification. It is suitable for anyone who does not wish to take mathematics at A level but is taking subjects with a significant maths content, for example applied science, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, business studies, economics or psychology. It is strongly recommended for students taking chemistry, physics, biology or psychology. Mathematical Studies is suitable for anyone with a level 5 or better at GCSE, however there is a significant algebra content, so this should be borne in mind when deciding whether this is the right course for you. There is also a strong focus on percentages and statistics.
You would learn
i. how to apply percentages in real life situations. We consider many contexts, for example on personal finance, global banking and stock markets, mortgages and interest rates.
ii. how to apply statistical techniques. We particularly focus on examples in psychology, biology and business studies.
iii. exponential and logarithmic functions
iv. how to make reasonable estimates in complicated situations
v. to develop a better understanding of the graphs of various functions.
We strongly advise students to consider this option for any subject with a substantial mathematical base including: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Economics, Business Studies and others.
- How to approach a complicated question and break it down into simpler steps.
- How to read through source material and identify the relevant information.
- How to make reasonable estimations in a variety of contexts and arrive at a sensible answer.
- How to apply routine mathematical procedures to questions that arise in other subjects.
- How to develop your knowledge of graphs to understand how they are applied at A level.
It will support your other A levels and is particularly valued by universities and employers alike. It is strongly recommended that you take this course to improve your chances of securing really good grades across the board.
5 x GCSE grades 4-9 (incl. English Language)
5 in Maths
Not essential but it will help your success…
An open mind to exploring familiar mathematical ideas in a more complicated context.
This is chosen as an alternative to A Level Maths when studying subjects with a mathematical content such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Psychology and Economics.
Two double lessons per week
This is 100% examination. There will be 2 papers at the end of the course
