Creative Media Production – HNC

This highly practical course is aimed at those interested in film and video making as an alternative to and/or progression route to University. The course encourages experimentation and creative development. It includes all aspects of digital video film making as well as an emphasis on the use of sound and editing using Premiere Pro.

If you choose this course you would benefit from:

  • Experienced teachers who possess a genuine interest in Creative Media Industries and who will encourage students to develop the knowledge and skills required to work in the discipline.
  • Regular visits by practicing filmmakers and industry professionals throughout the academic year. Ken Loach, Jim Hickey and Dan Gage have all given guest lectures over the last few years.
  • Trips related to the subject such as Paris, Berlin and the Edinburgh International Film Festival (annually). Cinema screenings at ‘The Electric Cinema’ in Birmingham and visits to local universities to enhance the student experience.
  • Developing a portfolio of work that can be shown to potential employers or higher educational establishments.

Throughout the year you will learn:

  • How Media Productions generate meanings and responses through technical features; such as cinematography, mise-en-scène, editing, sound, lighting and performance.
  • Media Production and its key institutional contexts (including social, cultural, political, historical and technological)
  • To develop creatively, within the criteria of the unit briefs, and produce projects that relate to your own personal interests and experiences.
  • How to develop commercial links and build solid industry standard skills to increase your potential prospects in the local business market.
  • Research methods, production techniques, reflective practices in order to refine your analytical and creative skills to enable you to successfully navigate all aspects of course assessment.

8 Units must be completed:

  • Film and Media: Contextual Studies
  • Screen Craft
  • Key concepts in Film & Studies
  • Creative Media Production: from Concept to Screen
  • Making Media (Promotional Video)
  • Professional Development: Career Progression

The course will be taught using a variety of techniques and approaches. This will involve contextual study lectures’, film screenings, reflective group critiques as well as a large number of practical production activities.

Course activities will include:

  • Viewing short film sequences to demonstrate technical features; such as cinematography, mise-en-scène, editing, sound, lighting and performance.
  • The screening of key films and the study of critical approaches for the analysis of a variety of media productions.
  • Group production tasks, presentations and regular skills workshops.
  • Developing technical production skills both within the wider community.
  • Storyboarding, camera techniques, lighting, editing and sound production tutorials.
  • Developing research methods and understanding of the key theoretical approaches

Students who complete the HNC tend to progress onto the 2nd Year of related creative degree courses or move straight into a workplace environment. This has included employment or study in Film, Media Production, Photography or Fashion. Students who study this course could also use their knowledge, skills and experience to create their own Media Production Enterprises.

  • 120 UCAS Points (old points)
  • At least 3 x D grades in 1 or more related subject
  • Interview is required for any external applicants

Teaching contact time is 14 hours with students working independently over the course of 5 college days. Students are expected to work independently outside of college also to complete Unit assignments, production work and independent research tasks.
