Financial Studies

Financial Studies will suit students who are interested in money and want to develop their financial literacy.  The course investigates financial capability and will allow students to explored financial products and make informed and effective decisions with financial resources.

If you choose this course you would benefit from:

  • Guest lecturers from the finance industry such as representatives from Coventry Building Society, Lloyds Bank and Santander Bank.
  • Trips to explore the world of finance; such as the financial quarter in London, the London metal exchange and local Banks and Building Society’s.
  • Competitions to put knowledge into practice for example the Student Investor Challenge.

In the first year you will study:

  • The value and purpose of money.
  • The features of different types of financial services product.
  • The role of key stakeholders in financial services provision.
  • The characteristics of financial products for managing money.
  • How to manage finance in the short term and the impact of poor decision-making and unforeseen circumstances.
  • The impact of legislation and regulations on earnings and the key features of income tax and National Insurance.
  • Individual’s financial needs through the various life stages.
  • The features of risks and rewards in managing personal finances.
  • When where and how an individual can get financial help and advice.

In the second year you will study:

  • The importance of financial sustainability for individuals.
  • The key external financial factors influencing financial performance and the resulting effect on the consumer.
  • The need to monitor personal budgets and adapt plans in response to changes in circumstances.
  • The personal implications of debt and borrowing solutions for individuals in different circumstances and from different cultures.
  • The Impact of global events, developments and ethical considerations upon the financial services industry and ultimately the consumer.
  • The impact on the consumer of changes that have occurred in the financial services industry in recent years.
  • How financial services providers work and the competitive environment in which they operate.
  • The effectiveness of marketing materials produced by financial services providers.
  • Approaches used by financial services providers to attract, retain and satisfy consumers.

This course is taught around a flipped learning approach, students make use of materials on the college Moodle site to research topics before they are delivered in class. This prior research is then assessed in class and activities follow which allow learners to explore the content in more detail and apply them to real business situations. In addition, your teacher and personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice to support your learning.

As part of a wider programme this course provides an excellent basis for progression to many careers or university courses.
Former students of this course have gone on to study Finance, Business, Accounting and Banking courses at university and employment/apprenticeships within banks and building societies.

Not essential but it will help your success…

An interest in the world of banking and finance. Good grammar and writing skills.

Pairs well with, Business, Applied Business, Economics and Maths.  You prefer to do a course based on exams throughout the 1st and 2nd year.

Teaching contact time is 4 hours and 20 minutes per subject. Other workshops will be available throughout the year including over some holiday periods. Students are expected to complete up to 4 hours of independent study to complete assignments, homework, extra reading and independent research.

4 exams each having a combination of 35 multiple choice questions and essay responses from a pre-issue case study:

  • Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short Term 25%
  • Financial Capability for the Medium and Long Term 25%
  • Sustainability of an Individuals Finances 25%
  • Sustainability of the Financial Services System 25%
