A second year student from King Edward VI College in Nuneaton was selected to attend a Marine Biology Summer School at Southampton University this summer. Jade Wallace, who is 17 and lives in Weddington, was given this fantastic opportunity after her Geography teacher, Kate Phillips, encouraged her students to apply.
“Jade is an enthusiastic young woman who’s interest in the environment and all things marine is clear. She works hard and with interest in all her studies, and is a pleasure to have in the department. Jade thoroughly deserved the place on the summer school, and obviously got a huge amount out of going “ said Kate.
“She got to work with some of the most prominent marine specialists in the world, and experience practical research techniques. She has since applied to do Marine Biology at university and I look forward to seeing her go on from strength to strength”
Jade is currently studying Geography, Physics and Biology A levels at the King Edward Road site and is looking forward to moving on to University when she finishes her studies next year.
During the five day course Jade was put into groups and given a mentor who was studying marine biology. The group went out on a research vessel to collect data and once this had been analysed each student presented their findings to the rest of the group.
“As well as getting a taste of student life on campus we also had the opportunity to attend many lectures given by experts in their specialised field – including a jelly fish expert!” said Jade
Jade continued “It was a fantastic experience and helped me a lot in deciding what I want to do after college. I am still aiming to study marine biology and then I have hopes of specialising in marine zoology when I finish the three year course.”
