King Edward VI College Student Wins Aberystwyth University Award

A student from King Edward VI College in Nuneaton has been successful in Aberystwyth University’s Entrance Scholarship competition.

This year, the University awarded 65 Scholarships and a number of Merit Awards to students applying to study at Aberystwyth in September 2017.

Sally Joelle Cowling received an Institute Entrance Scholarship worth £2,000 a year, while Luke James Barnett received an unconditional offer on the basis of his strong performance in the examinations.

Sally joined the college after doing a year at a local school sixth form and deciding it wasn’t the right choice for her. “I wanted to go to a small sixth form but it was totally the wrong decision for me. Since joining KEC I have never looked back and to then go on and be awarded this scholarship is amazing news!”

Aberystwyth University runs a scholarship competition every January, with awards worth £1,000 to £2,000 per year to help students with their living costs. The Entrance Scholarships are part of a wider package of scholarships and bursaries offered by the University. Kylie Evans, Academic Awards Officer at Aberystwyth University, said:

“We would like to congratulate the students who have been successful in this year’s exams and we look forward to welcoming them to Aberystwyth in September. The entrance exams recognise academic ability but we also have a wide range of other awards to help students with their living costs. In some cases, students can receive in excess of £15,000 over the course of their studies.”

Principal at King Edward VI College Uly Lyons said “At KEC we are exceptionally proud of the achievements of our students and none more so than Sally & Luke. They are very hard working students and demonstrate all the attributes of students who will go on to be very successful in their future studies. Winning these awards from Aberystwyth is a fantastic recognition of these attributes and we look forward to hearing of their future success at Aberystwyth and in their future careers.”
