A former King Edward VI College student from Bedworth has been shortlisted for the WJEC’s Moving Image Awards.
Matthew Sedgley from Bedworth entered his music video after his Film Studies teacher encouraged him to take part. He was shortlisted from 700 entries and is now down to the final 3.
A representative from WJEC said “The standard of all work was amazingly high and much of the work was exceptional, making it extremely difficult for the judges.”
Matthew said “I was a little reluctant at first as I was worried my work wouldn’t be good enough but I’m glad I did now and I’m grateful for the support from staff at the college. ”
He continued “I chose KEG’s because I was looking for somewhere which offers both practical and theory elements in regards to filming and I wanted to learn how to use a camera whilst continuing to do A levels. Also the fact that legendary filmmaker Ken Loach went there kind of helped.”
After leaving KEGs last year Matthew has gone on to work at a creative agency in Birmingh
am as a videographer and editor.
The music video itself is for a local band called ‘The Ellipsis’ and was shot at the disused landmark, Moseley Road Baths. Matthew made this video as part of his A Level Photography coursework.

Matthew’s photography teacher Jaskirt Boora said “Matthew showed great skill, guile and creativity during his A Levels, especially in that second year where he blossomed into a filmmaker. He approached his work with maturity and independence and fully deserves to be nominated for the WJEC moving image award of best music video. He is working to a professional standard already, so it will be exciting to see what he produces next, especially as he has inspired so many of the Photography and Film student A Level students at the college this year. Fingers crossed he wins!”
The awards ceremony takes
place on the 11th December at the British Film Institute in London. For each category the work of the 3 shortlisted candidates will be shown at the awards.
Matthew continued “I’ll be attending the awards along with the band. They are hugely talented and I am proud to work with them. Its safe to say we are really anxious as the quality of the work entered is so high but awards aside, I can’t wait to meet other filmmakers like myself.”
