Medical Science

Medical Science is for students who are interested in medical science and biology or health-related issues. It explores the foundations of health and disease and how the body is monitored to diagnose conditions. It allows you to use techniques that are employed in medical research.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:

In the first year you will study:
• Human health & disease
• Ways in which the body is monitored
• Research methods and analysis of data in a medical context

In the second year you will study:
• Medicine and the treatment of disease
• Clinical laboratory techniques
• Medical case studies

 

What will I be taught?

Flipped learning is used to encourage students to explore materials and resources for themselves and to develop skills in the classroom

• Exam based assessments
• Quizzes and tests

Based on research into how students learn best, each subject will set independent work to allow you to recap what you have done in the past, consolidate understanding for what you are studying in the present and develop the skills and experiences which will help you for the future. The Present
Each subject will set weekly homework tasks to help you consolidate your understanding and prepare for your next lesson. This work is typically set through Microsoft Teams, so you will have an electronic log of all your work, notes and feedback.

Not essential but it will help your success…

An interest in how the human body works and an interest in health. Commitment to working in an organised way, using research skills to problem solve.  Do not choose this subject if you intend to study Medicine at University.

Pairs well with Health and Social Care, Applied Science, Sociology, Psychology. You prefer to do a course that is a mix of exams, controlled assessment and coursework.

Teaching contact time is 4 hours and 20 minutes per subject.  Other workshops will be available throughout the year including over some holiday periods.  Students are expected to complete up to 4 hours of independent study to complete assignments, homework, extra reading and independent research.
