Applied Science
Applied Science is for students who are interested in science, science-related or health-related issues. It explores the foundations of Biology, Chemistry & Physics and has a large amount of practical work. It allows you to use techniques that are employed in the workplace and understand the industries that use science.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:
- Experienced teachers who have worked in the science industry and in scientific research
- Visits to pathology and water treatment laboratories, the Natural History museum and De Montfort University
- The opportunity to experience and study all three sciences
- Access to modern equipment and the development of independent practical skills
In the first year you will study:
- The structure of atoms and the periodic table
- Chemical bonding
- Balancing equations
- Cell structure and specialised cells
- Tissue structure and adaptations to function
- Waves and the EM spectrum
- The science behind communication: optic fibres, satellites, mobile phones
- Practical work in chromatography, colourimetry, titration and calorimetry
In the second year you will study:
- How to plan and run a practical investigation
- Enzymes in action
- Movement of molecules
- Plants and their environments
- Energy content in fuels
- Electrical circuits
- DNA and the genetic code
- Inheritance
- Genetic Engineering
What will i be taught?
Flipped learning is used to encourage students to explore materials and resources for themselves and to develop skills in the classroom
Classroom activities will include:
- Practical investigation
- Group work
- Exam based assessments
- Quizzes and tests
Based on research into how students learn best, each subject will set independent work to allow you to recap what you have done in the past, consolidate understanding for what you are studying in the present and develop the skills and experiences which will help you for the future. The Present
Each subject will set weekly homework tasks to help you consolidate your understanding and prepare for your next lesson. This work is typically set through Microsoft Teams, so you will have an electronic log of all your work, notes and feedback.
The Future
A key part of your independent work in this subject will be to prepare for a range of potential jobs and higher education courses when you leave us. To get started, look below at the top higher education courses and jobs which previous students of this course have gone on to do.
As part of a wider programme this course provides an excellent basis for progression to many careers or university courses.
