Health & Social Care

Health & Social Care will suit students who are interested in pursuing a career in Health, Social Care or Early Years sectors. The course investigates real life problems faced by businesses and explores possible solutions. Students will be encouraged to use their initiative in order to solve these problems.

  • Voluntary work placements to enable you to experience various Health, Social Care or Early Years settings.

In the first year you will study:

  • Different types of communication and how they are used.
  • Building professional relationships and factors that impact on them.
  • Person-centred working.
  • Legislations that protect people who use services, employees and employers.
  • The care values.
  • Health, safety and security.
  • Hazards and risk assessment.
  • Safeguarding and organisational policies/procedures that promote safety.

In the second year you will study:

  • Anatomy & Physiology for Health and Social Care.
  • Body systems, their structure, function and dysfunction.
  • Nutrition for health and the importance of a balanced diet.
  • Financial implications of the rising levels of obesity in the UK
  • How to support people to improve their health and well-being.
  • Sexual health and contraception.
  • Factors that impact on pre-natal health.
  • Health and development of a foetus and a babies in the first year of life.

What will I be taught?

This course is taught around a flipped learning approach, students make use of materials on the college Moodle site to research topics before they are delivered in class. This prior research is then assessed in class and activities follow which allow learners to explore the content in more detail and apply them to real Health, social care or early years situations. In addition, your teacher and personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice to support your learning.

Classroom activities will include:

  • One-to-one feedback on coursework tasks.
  • Essay based assessments
  • Study and completion of past papers
  • group work
  • student led session

Based on research into how students learn best, each subject will set independent work to allow you to recap what you have done in the past, consolidate understanding for what you are studying in the present and develop the skills and experiences which will help you for the future. The Present
Each subject will set weekly homework tasks to help you consolidate your understanding and prepare for your next lesson. This work is typically set through Microsoft Teams, so you will have an electronic log of all your work, notes and feedback.

Not essential but it will help your success…

A strong interest in  Human Anatomy and how the health care industry works.

Pairs well with Medical Science, Applied Science and Sociology.

Teaching contact time is 4 hours and 20 minutes per subject. Other workshops will be available throughout the year, including over some holiday periods. Students are expected to complete up to 4 hours of independent study to complete assignments, homework, extra reading and independent research.

OCR

Year 12 will consist of 2 exams and 1 coursework portfolio.

Year 13 will consist of 1 exam and 2 coursework portfolios.
