Why study Applied Science (BTEC Certificate)?

If you enjoy science and like learning through practical, hands-on work, this course could be perfect for you. You’ll explore all three areas of science — biology, chemistry, and physics — in a way that’s applied to real-world situations. To do well, you’ll need to be curious, able to manage your time, meet deadlines, and have a basic understanding of how science works. You should also be confident using a computer.

You’ll study four main units over the year — three are coursework-based, and one is an exam.

Unit 5 – Chemistry (Coursework)

In this unit, you’ll learn how chemistry is used in the manufacturing industry. You’ll carry out experiments like:

  • Investigating exothermic and endothermic reactions
  • Identifying organic compounds
  • You’ll write up your experiments in lab reports, just like scientists do in the real world. You’ll also research how different chemical products are used in everyday life.

Unit 6 – Physics (Coursework)

This unit focuses on how physics helps us stay safe and supports modern technologies. Topics include:

  • Motion and forces
  • Electricity
  • Waves
  • You’ll perform practical experiments and record your findings in lab reports.

Unit 7 – Biology (Coursework)

This unit is all about how biology is used in health and medical science. You’ll explore:

  • The effects of diet and exercise
  • How the immune system works and the role of vaccines
  • Screening programs that help detect diseases early
  • Medical advances that use biology to treat illness
  • By the end, you’ll understand how biology is used in healthcare and scientific research.

Unit 8 – Scientific Skills (Exam)

This unit brings together skills from biology, chemistry, and physics. You’ll learn how scientists:

  • Carry out research and investigations
  • Test the quality of products
  • Grow cultures in labs
  • Check if food and water are safe
  • Calibrate medical equipment
  • Work in forensic science
  • You’ll build your investigation and lab skills in preparation for the final exam.

This course is ideal if:

  • You didn’t get the GCSE science grades needed for A-levels
  • You prefer coursework over exams
  • You want to move on to Level 3 Applied Science, Medical Science, or other vocational (career-focused) courses
  • ⚠️ This course does not lead to A-Level Biology, Chemistry, or Physics.

If you pass this course — especially with a Distinction — you can progress to a Level 3 course such as Applied Science or Medical Science.

From there, students have gone on to:

  • University courses in areas like:
    • Forensic Science
    • Biomedical Science (foundation years)
    • Pharmacology (foundation years)
  • Allied Health Professions, such as:
    • Nursing / Midwifery
    • Paramedic Science
    • Occupational Health
    • Sports Therapy
  • Apprenticeships in science-based jobs like lab work or technician roles

If you’re interested in a science career but prefer a more practical route, this course is a great first step.
